Hidden Mold

Suspicion of mold

You may be suspicious of mold in your home. Does your home smell musty, has there been water damage, are you suffering from health problems? Hidden mold can be on the back of wallpaper or paneling, top of ceiling tiles, under carpets, etc. Other locations of hidden mold include inside walls with leaking pipes, behind furniture, and inside ductwork. Because of roof leaks or inadequate attic insulation, mold may be in your attic around air vents. The most important step in solving a mold problem is to identify and correct the moisture sources that allowed the growth in the first place.

Inspecting for mold problems

Finding hidden mold is difficult and requires caution when the investigation involves disturbing possible locations of unseen mold growth. For example, removing wallpaper or paneling can lead to a substantial release of spores into the air if there is mold growing on the backside of the wall covering. Some people are sensitive to molds. Exposure to molds can lead to symptoms such as stuffy nose, wheezing, and red or itchy eyes, or skin. Some people, such as those with allergies to molds or with asthma, may have more intense reactions.
