What is manufactured Stone Veneer?
Unlike real stone, manufactured stone veneer is a decorative material designed to look like natural stone. It is made from a lightweight concrete mix that is poured into forms of different styles. Then they add a little color to make it look like the real thing.
Manufactured stone veneer has become a popular option for new homes or remodeling an older home. Some of the uses of manufactured stone veneer are as accents around door and windows. Also, it has been put on columns to add a little flare to the front of a home. And, of course, it is used as an exterior siding. This is in place of, or with stucco.
However, stone veneer can cause problems for us as homeowners if it is not installed or cared for properly.
Why Are Stone Veneer Problems So Common?
It may surprise you to learn that the application process of manufactured stone veneer and stucco is similar. So, manufactured stone veneer can be at risk to the same moisture problems as stucco.
If the stone veneer is not applied properly, water problems will occur. Moisture can get behind the stone wall around unsealed openings. This moisture can result in mold and rot, damaging wood studs and wall sheathing. Water will also absorb into block walls and work its way into the home.
There are installation guidelines that the manufacturers require. These guidelines help prevent moisture intrusion from occurring and extends the look and life of the stone veneer.
